MOOBY'S.AT GIANNI'S PIZZERIA.
Bringing a fictional fast-food restaurant from the big screen into the real world.
From the screen to the storefront: transforming an operating neighborhood pizzeria into an immersive Mooby's restaurant experience.

The Challenge
For fans of filmmaker Kevin Smith, Mooby's was more than a fictional fast-food chain. Featured throughout his cinematic universe, the restaurant had become a recognizable part of the films and their devoted fan culture.
In September 2020, the traveling Mooby's pop-up experience arrived in Red Bank, New Jersey, with plans to take over Gianni's Pizzeria.
The challenge was to transform an existing, fully operational neighborhood pizzeria into an immersive restaurant experience that felt authentic to the fictional brand, while maintaining the functionality required for a real food-service operation.
Every detail mattered. From the exterior signage and interior environment to the packaging and kitchen workflow, the transformation needed to go beyond temporary decorations.
The goal was to make a restaurant that existed only in the movies feel real.

The Idea
Turn Gianni's Pizzeria into a fully realized Mooby's restaurant, bringing the fictional brand to life through physical design and production.
Start Monday Media Group was brought in to help execute the transformation, translating the established Mooby's identity into a working restaurant environment.
Rather than simply placing recognizable graphics around the existing space, the approach was to integrate the fictional restaurant into every aspect of the guest experience.
The storefront, counter, food packaging, signage, and operational environment needed to work together, creating a cohesive experience that fans would immediately recognize.
The creative challenge was not to reinvent Mooby's. It was to make the world audiences already knew believable outside the screen.

The Execution
Start Monday played a central role in the design and physical transformation of Gianni's Pizzeria into the Mooby's Pop-Up, contributing to the environmental buildout, production, packaging, and restaurant operations.
The Scope of Work
- Environmental design and branded interiors
- Exterior signage and environmental graphics
- Custom food packaging, cups and containers
- Set production and physical buildout
- Customer-facing displays and branded surfaces
- Coordination with real restaurant operations
The finished environment allowed guests to step into a restaurant they had previously experienced only through Kevin Smith's films.
The first Red Bank activation ran from September 18–25, 2020, welcoming fans and appearances from Kevin Smith and members of his extended film family, including Jason Mewes and Brian O'Halloran.
The experience returned to Gianni's Pizzeria from September 8–18, 2021, bringing Mooby's back to Red Bank for a second engagement.

The Experience
For guests, the transformation extended far beyond the storefront. The experience continued through the ordering counter, menu boards, branded interiors, and the food packaging they carried home.
Custom cups, bags, takeaway boxes, and smaller printed details worked together to make the fictional restaurant feel consistent from arrival to the final handoff.
Opening-day celebrations, fan interactions, and local media attention brought another dimension to the activation, connecting Kevin Smith's fictional world with the community gathered at Gianni's.
The Impact
What began as a temporary restaurant transformation became part of a larger cultural moment connecting food, entertainment, and Kevin Smith's New Jersey roots.
The pop-up generated regional and national media attention, bringing recognition to Gianni's Pizzeria and extending the reach of the experience beyond those who attended in person.
Its return in 2021 demonstrated the continued appeal of bringing the fictional restaurant into the real world.
The connection between Gianni's and Kevin Smith's cinematic universe extended beyond the public pop-up. The restaurant was also used as a Mooby's filming location during production of Clerks III, further connecting the physical space to the franchise that inspired the experience.
For Start Monday, the project demonstrated the importance of execution in experiential marketing: translating an established creative concept into a cohesive, functional environment that people could physically experience.
More than a temporary rebrand, Mooby's demonstrated how design, production, and hospitality can bring a fictional world into reality.

It wasn't enough to look like Mooby's. It had to feel like Mooby's.
The Takeaway
It wasn't enough to make Gianni's look like Mooby's. It had to feel like Mooby's.
The project represents Start Monday's ability to work beyond traditional branding and marketing, bringing creative concepts into physical spaces through environmental design, production, and operational coordination.
From custom packaging and storefront graphics to the complete restaurant transformation, the work required creativity grounded in real-world execution.
The result was an immersive hospitality experience that connected an established entertainment franchise with a local New Jersey business.
